Realme 16 5G

Hello tech-lovers! How are you all? In the world of smartphones, new phones are coming out every day. But to be honest, when you pick up most new phones these days, you feel, “Hey, this is just like the old one!” That sense of novelty is no longer there like it used to be.

But a few days ago when Realme 16 5G When I got my hands on it, the tech bug inside me stirred again. There was a time when Realme’s number series meant the ‘king’ of the budget segment. But in the middle, they lost some of their edge when competing with Redmi and Poco.

So will they regain their lost kingdom with the Realme 16 5G? Or is this just an old phone in a new guise?

In today’s article, we will be discussing the ins and outs of this phone in a very open manner. This is not a sponsored post, but rather my honest and personal experience as a regular user. So, sit down with a cup of tea or coffee, and let’s begin today’s review!

Unboxing Experience: That iconic yellow box!

There’s something special about unboxing a new gadget, isn’t it? Realme has retained their signature bright yellow box. There’s a premium feel to the box as soon as you pick it up.

After opening the box, the first thing you see is the desired phone. But the most exciting thing is the stuff inside. These days, Apple or Samsung consider it a crime to put a charger in the box! But Realme has not been stingy here.

What’s inside the box:

  • Realme 16 5G phone.
  • A good quality dark-tinted TPU cover (won’t turn yellow in 2 days like the cheap transparent covers on the side of the road).
  • SuperVOOC fast charging brick (which is really useful).
  • Realme’s iconic white Type-C cable.
  • SIM ejector tool and some paperwork (that none of us ever read!).

Overall, no complaints about the unboxing. Everything you need is here.

Design and build quality: How does it feel in the hand?

Design is different for everyone. But looking at the design of the Realme 16 5G, you can’t call it bad.

When I first picked up the phone, I was impressed by its ‘weight distribution’ or weight balance. Despite having a huge battery inside, the phone doesn’t feel heavy at all. This year, Realme has used flat edges or even frames—which everyone has been copying since the iPhone. But to be honest, it makes the phone much better to grip.

The back panel has a Vegan Leather finish (depending on the color variant). This is a blessing for those who don’t like to use covers on their phones like me! It doesn’t show any fingerprints or smudges. And the phone looks quite premium and expensive.

The rear camera module is quite large. From a distance, people will notice that your phone has a huge camera setup. However, the only problem is that the camera bump is a bit too high, which makes it quite wobbly when you place the phone on a table and type.

Display: Eye-pleasing!

I always say that the most important part of a smartphone is its display, because at the end of the day, you’ll be spending hours and hours looking at this screen.

The Realme 16 5G features a stunning 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display If you’re upgrading from an older LCD screen phone, you’ll be amazed at the difference. The colors are very vibrant and the blacks are absolutely black.

120Hz refresh rate: buttery smooth
Scrolling through menus, watching reels on Facebook or Instagram—everything feels buttery smooth thanks to the phone’s 120Hz refresh rate. It’s adaptive, meaning when you’re viewing a still image, its refresh rate will automatically decrease to save battery.

Can it be seen clearly even in bright sunlight?
One of the biggest problems with budget phones is that the screen is not visible in direct sunlight. But Realme has solved this problem. Its peak brightness is so good that you don’t have to squint even a little to view Google Maps or read messages while standing in the bright sun.

Performance and Gaming: How Powerful?

Now let’s get into the details. For performance, the Realme 16 5G uses a powerful processor. MediaTek Dimensity Processor (a fairly balanced chipset for the mid-range), accompanied by 8GB or 12GB of RAM.

But leaving aside these technicalities, let’s talk in layman’s terms.

If you’re a regular user—one who runs Facebook, WhatsApp, watches videos on YouTube, and keeps 15 apps open in the background at once—this phone won’t lag or freeze even once.

Gaming Experience:
I’m not a big gamer myself, but I have to test everything to review. If you Call of Duty or PUBG If you play games like this, you can play them easily on high settings. However, Genshin Impact If you want to play heavy games like – you will have to lower the graphics to medium or low. Because honestly, this is not a gaming phone worth one lakh taka.

You won’t have to worry about heating issues while gaming. Even though the area around the camera module gets slightly warm after 45 minutes of continuous gaming, it never gets to the point where it feels hot to the touch.

Camera: Social media ready?

Companies usually try to create a gimmick by putting 3-4 cameras on budget phones. Let’s see what Realme has done here.

Main sensor (50MP OIS)
Its primary camera is simply amazing. Due to the presence of OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), the pictures taken in daylight are very sharp and detailed. Realme’s image processing boosts the colors a little. This means that the sky looks a little bluer and the grass a little greener. For those who like natural pictures, it may seem a little artificial. But for ordinary users, it is great, because you can upload the picture directly to Instagram or Facebook without any editing!

Night photo
The real magic of having OIS is at night. It can capture pretty good light even in low-light. You might notice some noise when zooming in, but its night mode is really commendable at this budget.

Ultrawide and… that unnecessary macro!
The phone has an 8-megapixel (8MP) ultrawide lens, which is more than enough for group photos or landscapes.

And there’s a 2-megapixel (2MP) macro lens. I don’t know why companies still include this lens just to increase the number of cameras! You might take a picture of a flower on the first day after buying a phone, and then you won’t remember this lens for the rest of your life.

Video recording
The rear camera lets you record videos at 4K 30fps. Its stabilization is pretty good, so it won’t let you down for casual blogging or family videos.

Don’t forget about the selfie camera!

The 16-megapixel selfie camera on the front of the phone takes great photos in daylight. However, Realme’s default beauty mode makes the face a little too ‘smooth’ or fair. So if you want to get a natural look, it would be wise to go to the settings and turn off the beauty filter. It is also quite clear for video calling.

Battery and charging: No more worrying about running out of battery!

The biggest tension of smartphone users is—”Hey, the phone doesn’t charge!” Realme always wins in this area.

It has a huge 5000 mAh battery. Even after heavy usage (continuous gaming, camera test, Spotify, YouTube) I saw 20-25% charge remaining at the end of the day. If you are a normal user, this battery will easily last for one and a half to two days.

SuperVOOC Magic
But the real surprise is its charging speed. The 67W (or more) fast charger included in the box takes the experience of charging the phone to another level.

Imagine waking up in the morning and seeing that your phone is only 5% charged. You plug it in and go to brush your teeth, come back refreshed and see that your phone’s charge is close to 80%! This fast charging technology has really made our daily lives a lot easier.

Software (Realme UI): Smooth, but one small issue

No matter how powerful the hardware is, if the software is not good, the entire experience falls apart.

Realme 16 5G runs on the latest Android-based Realme UI. This user interface is much cleaner and smoother than before. The animations are also quite nice.

Bloatware (unnecessary apps) problem:
But here’s the truth: When you open the phone for the first time, you’ll see a lot of unnecessary third-party apps and games pre-installed all over the screen. It’s quite annoying.
But the solution is: If you want, you can uninstall these apps in just 5 minutes. Once uninstalled, your phone will feel completely fresh to use.

Touch of AI:
2024-25 is the era of AI. Realme has added some great AI features here. For example, there is an ‘AI Eraser’ in the photo gallery, which can be used to remove unwanted people or objects from the background of the photo with one click. In addition, AI Smart Battery Management optimizes the phone’s performance by understanding your usage pattern.

Audio, haptics and connectivity

We often forget about the phone’s speaker or vibration motor, but they greatly enhance the premium feel of using the phone.

  • Speaker: The sound from its stereo speakers is quite loud and clear. Even when listening to music at full volume, the sound doesn’t crack.
  • Haptics: The haptic feedback that you get when you type on the keyboard is really nice. It feels like you’re pressing a physical button.
  • Connectivity: With 5G support, the latest WiFi, and Bluetooth, you won’t have to worry about connectivity for the next 3-4 years.

Who should buy this phone? (Buyer Persona)

I’ve sung a lot of praises so far. Now let’s get down to business—should you buy this phone? Compare and see which category you fall into:

1. Social Media and Content Lover: If you spend all day on Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok, its great display and large battery are perfect for you.
2. Casual Photographer: Its primary camera will satisfy those who like to take pictures and upload them directly to social media.
3. Budget-conscious users: This is a great option for those looking for a reliable and stylish phone that will last a long time.

Who should not buy?
If you are someone whose main focus is hardcore gaming, then you would be better off getting a Poco phone instead of a Realme. And for those who like very small and compact phones, this is also not for them, as the phone is quite large in size.

Pros & Cons at a Glance

For the sake of honesty, the negative aspects of the phone should also be highlighted, because nothing is 100% perfect.

Positive aspects (Pros):

  • Excellent 120Hz AMOLED display.
  • Premium vegan leather design.
  • Super fast charging (charger in the box).
  • The performance of the primary camera and OIS is excellent.
  • Battery life enough to use comfortably all day.

Negative aspects (Cons):

  • A lot of unnecessary apps or bloatware are visible right out of the box.
  • The 2-megapixel macro lens is completely a gimmick.
  • The phone feels quite wobbly when placed on a flat surface due to the large camera bump.

Last words: my personal opinion

Overall, is the Realme 16 5G really a value for money device?

In my opinion, Yes!

If you’re using a 3-4 year old phone, switching to the Realme 16 5G will feel like a huge upgrade. Beautiful screen, all-day battery, reliable performance, and great cameras—Realme has everything a typical user needs.

Yes, Realme may no longer have the ‘flagship killer’ tag it had 5 years ago, but with this phone, they have once again proven that they are masters at creating a perfectly balanced phone for everyday use by the common man.
